Force may be defined as an agency which produces motion in a body or may alter the existing state of the motion in a body. It posses following properties:

Force is a vector quantity and it should be specified by both direction & magnitude.

If one of the magnitude or the direction or even both changes, then the effect of the force will also change.

Force is basically an interaction between two objects, which may come in the form of a push or a pull.

Force can change the physical state of a body.

Force may change the state of motion of a body.

In classical mechanics, we generally divide force in 4 categories such as : tension, contact or normal force, friction and air resistance or drag force.
