Rules for writing reported speech :-

Ex :- Mary said , "I am very busy. "

Reported speech :- Mary said that she was very busy .

1. We must use the linker like "that" in reporter speech.

2. The pronoun changes from "I" to "she" in reported speech.

3. The verb changes according to the type of tense present in the direct speech .

In above example :-

"am" → direct speech ( verb)

"was" → reported speech ( verb) .

4. When direct speech is changed into reported speech , the following are changed according to certain rules .

  • Tenses
  • Personal pronouns ( I, you, etc) and possessives (my, your, etc)
  • Words denoting nearness of time ( today, now, etc) and nearness of position (this, here, etc)
