The objectives of first aid, is just that, to provide the “first aid” to a person who has been injured. In may cases, such as a scraped knee, a small cut, or minor illness, that is all the aid that a person needs. In more severe cases, the first aid is meant to stabilize the person until better, trained and equipped providers arrive. An example is CPR, the first aider starts CPR and the rescue squad shows up and provides care beyond the training of the first aider such as medications, airway adjuncts and IV’s.
I like to tell my students that much of the class is what to do in the 10 minutes it takes to get the rescue squad to show up and to determine if you even need to call them in the first place.
The topics of first aid and EMT are very similar but the depth and scope are different. To greatly simplify, I teach the same material to my Boy Scouts as I do at the EMT level but the Boy Scout class is 4 hours long and the EMT class is 130 plus. I can teach you how to control severe bleeding in about 15 minutes, but you won’t necessarily know why it works, the A&P of bleeding, what to do after you control the bleed, and other factors.
I feel it is important for everyone to learn CPR, bleeding control, and first aid. Please consider taking a class
