A base is a substance which when dissolved in water gives hydroxide OH- ions the solution.

NH4OH + HCL ⟶ NH4CI + H2O

The bases which are soluble in water and gives Hydroxide ion in the aqueous solution are called Alkalies.

NH3 + H2O ⟶ NH4OH ⟶ NH4+ + H2O

Base is a substance which neutralizes and acid therefore sodium carbonate Na2Co3 and Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate NaHCO3 are also considered as base, NaOH and acid H2CO3 are called carbonic acid.

  • Bases have bitter taste.

Action on litmus :-

Bases are having pH more than 7 which changes the red litmus to blue.
