Acceleration is a physical quantity which is just a change in velocity during some time interval...

For example : A car is moving with velocity 25 m/s and its changes or increases its velocity to 30 m/s in 5 seconds..

Here Change in velocity is 5 m/s and time during this change is 5 seconds...

if you divide this change in velocity with time = 5 seconds you will get Acceleration..

Acceleleration is denoted as letter a..so

a = Change in velocity / time during change

so in our above example..a = 5 / 5 = 1 m /s^2..

The unit of acceleration is meter per second square ie m/s^2

If there is increase in Velocity, then velocity and acceleration are in same Direction...If there is decrease in velocity, Then velocity and acceleration are in Opposite Direction...

When acceleration acts in the opposite direction of velocity then it has got Three Following Names..
1 - Retardation
2 - Decceleration
3 - Negative Acceleration
All above are the same..used only when acceleration act in the opposite direction of velocity...

For example..if brakes are applied , then there is a change in velocity i.,e decrease in velocity...This is why because acceleration act in the opposite direction of velocity..so This is one of the situation where you see Retardation...

Similarly, if you throw any object in upward direction...its velocity decreases ..it is agian just beacuse of Decceleration on object which is moving up...

And we also Observe this in our daily life as When we accelerate our bike or any vehicle its velocity increases...here velocity and acceleration acts in the same direction...

So simply i would say..acceleration is the rate of change in velocity...

the act or process of moving faster or happening more quickly : the act or process of accelerating rapid acceleration the acceleration of economic growth. b : ability to accelerate a car with good acceleration. 2 physics : the rate of change of velocity with respect to time broadly : change of velocity.
