Chola temples often became the nuclei of settlements which grew around them. These were centresof craft production. They were not only places of worship, they were the hub of economic, socialand cultural life as well. Amount the crafts associated with temples, the making of bronze images was the most distinctive.

The chola temple were the centre of the settlements. Temple were also endowed with land by rulers as well as by others. The produce of land was used for the maintenance of the priests, garland makers, cooks, sweepers, musicians, dancers etc. Who were associated with the themples and used to work for them. Hence temples were not simply the place of workship. They were also the hub of economic, social and cultural life as well.
