Advantages:

  1. People get to choose representatives after shorter time intervals. This could lead to higher accountability
  2. We will have opportunity to change our leaders earlier.

Disadvantages:

  1. A lot of money is spent on conducting elections and an enormous amount is spent by the participants for campaigning.
  2. The elections cause uncertainty in the ruling class. Each party has a slightly different way of interpreting rules, which causes a little confusion among stakeholders in the way they have to deal with government.
  3. There is also an apparent problem of taking populist measures before elections even though such actions eventually hurt the economy or social structure of the country.

When you disperse political power it allows people to protect themselves using that power for potential authoritarians (the other side of that coin is the tyranny of the majority, discussed below). Also, some argue that only you really know your best interests, and thus you should have a say in the process (even if it's through a representative).

Elections also confer legitimacy on a state when done fairly (but also can serve to legitimize an autocratic state if not fair).

Elections keep leaders compliant with at least the needs of the majority of the population, otherwise they will be voted out.
