Same as with any freedom of thought.
You are in danger of stifling original, beneficial and innovative ideas if you don't allow freedom, and you’re in danger of promoting bad, irrational, and toxic ideas if you do allow freedom.
So there will always and should always be tension.
Freedom in society though is a myth and a dangerous myth. As hunter gatherers we gave up our freedoms when we stumbled out of the jungles and settled down next to one another as farmers. We gave up our freedom the moment we had to live next to another human being without fighting.
We’re not free to drive at any speed we like, we’re not free to start our own police force, disobey the laws or create personal armies. We’re not free to murder, free to rape or free to express our ideas.
That's a good thing though - and what a society is. We give up our freedoms because society is collectively better for all of us. If we want to truly be free then we need to get back in the jungle and leave others alone.
So academic freedom is never truly free because society is and should never be entirely free. Radical ideas are fine but society is justified in guarding itself against them.
