Explanation:

Wintrobe method: The shorter column makes this method less sensitive than the Westergren method because the maximal possible abnormal value is lower. However, this method is more practical for demonstration purposes.

Advantages of the Wintrobe :-

  • This method is less sensitive than the Westergren method since the greatest potential aberrant value is smaller due to the shorter column. This approach is more useful for demonstrations, though.
  • Determination of Packed cell volume (PCV) Determination of Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) Preparation of Buffy coat smear. This smear is used to determine LE cell phenomenon and to study the abnormal cells in cases of aleukemic leukemia.

Advantages of the Westergren  :-

  • Lowering the amount of blood needed for haematological tests. Red cell shape preservation and maintenance of ideal blood stability. The likelihood of human error is decreased as a result of increased automation, which also improves economic efficiency.

Disadvantages of the Wintrobe :-

  • The majority of hospitals employ Wintrobe methods since they are inexpensive and do not require an electrical power source, but they have drawbacks such as a difficult time standardising and quality control, as well as a risk of biohazards.
