Advantages of the use of mechanical harvesting machines:

(a) The use of mechanical harvesting machines saved much in terms of physical labor. The work that was formerly done by hand could now be done by machines.

(b) The new machines helped big farmers to rapidly clear large tracts, remove the grass, prepare the land for cultivation, reap the crop easily and thresh it quickly.

(c) It became easy to meet the high demand for agricultural produce in the world.

(d) The use of mechanical harvesting machines increased agricultural production, thereby promoting trade and commerce.

(e) It brought about a period of prosperity.

Disadvantages:

(a) For poor farmers, machines brought misery. They reduced dependence on labor, leading to unemployment. For many it became difficult to find jobs.

(b) Many farmers who brought machines on loans thinking the boom would last, faced hard times when the boom ended by the 1920s. They faced difficulty in paying back the loans. Some were forced to abandon their farms.

(c) Production had expanded so rapidly that during the post war years , when the export market collapsed and wheat prices fell, farmers were left with large surpluses and overflowing storehouses.

(d) Extensive cultivation made feasible by machines resulted in the great Agrarian Depression of the 1930s, which ruined wheat farmers everywhere.

(e) Use of machines ruined the entire landscape resulting in ecological disbalance. Dust storms became black blizzards, ruining everything. The American dream of land of plenty turned into a nightmare.
