One huge disadvantage. Try studying birds of prey, for example, who decide to take off and fly several km, and you get to try and follow them across dangerous roads, fenced in areas, huge and impassable fields, walls, woods, buildings etc on foot/your bike/in your car, without losing site of them (This, as you can imagine, doesn't always work very well, even if you're radio-tracking them).
The advantage of course is what Dillon Borges and Trey Edmonds have already written: you get to observe their most natural behavior, as long as your studying them doesn't disturb them. It can be pretty awesome (the aerial acrobatics some birds will come up with to impress their mate are just seriously awesomely cool to watch), but also very tiring and frustrating. You also have less control over the test subject. It could be the animals you spotted one day decide that spot is no good the next day and disappear for good.
