Answer: Monsoon refers to seasonal change in the prevailing wind  direction which takes place in different parts of the world. These winds follows a path from colder to warmer region leading to wet and dry seasons covering much of the tropics. Monsoons are mainly linked to Indian Ocean.

Monsoons are divided into two parts namely,

a)The summer monsoon.

b)The winter monsoon.

The summer monsoon which takes place between April and September brings along heavy rainfall. With the departure of winter the moist air from the Southwest Indian Ocean makes a move toward countries like India, Bangladesh,Sri Lanka and Myanmar resulting in humid climate and heavy downpour in these region.

The winter monsoon occurs from October to April is less powerful than the summer ones. These winds blows from the northeast.

There are several advantages and disadvantages of monsoon

Advantages:

a)  A good rainfall often leads to a bumper agricultural produce.

b) There are several countries which do not have adequate irrigation system. These summer rainfalls helps in storing water in reservoirs which is critical for irrigation, power generation and drinking throughout the year.

c) A well distributed monsoon ensures a handsome income for the farmers livelihood.

d) There are many industries which depend heavily on monsoon.Certain crops like rice, tea etc require ample supply of rainfall to grow as a result they depend heavily on summer monsoon. Also dairy farming is dependent on the monsoon for their upkeep of their animals.

Disadvantages:

a) A weak or late monsoon slows down economic activities in the regions as people have less disposable income to spend.

b) Scarcity of water often leads to less of agricultural activities as irrigational means are water dependent. Farmers often faces with situations like drought and famine leading to less of crop production which leads to more imports by Government.

c)The cost of electricity also becomes expensive, leading to hindrances in the  development to large businesses

The prisoners sitting inside the prison had to live a very hard life during the rainy season. Many reptiles and snakes came out and haunted the prisoners. Nehru felt very suffocated during the monsoon as he was not allowed to come out of his prison and feel the beauty of nature.
