Terrestrial animals live on land and aquatic animals live under water. Oxygen is presence in abundance on the land. Under the water oxygen remains desolved in water and is comparetively lesser than the amount of oxygen on land. Terrestrial animals can breath the oxygen present in the air very easily through lungs. Aquatic animals have to put more effort to utilise the dissolved oxygen of water. So aquatic animals have special organs for breathing in the dissolved oxygen.

♤The amount of oxygen dissolved in water is fairly low as compared to the amount of oxygen present in air.
♤ the rate of breathing in aquatic organisms is much faster than that seen in terrestrial organisms.
♤ Fishes take in water through there mouth and force it past the gills where the dissolved oxygen is taken up by the blood.
