Oxygen to breathe. Carbon dioxide for plants which support the food chain.
Temperature. The “greenhouse effect,” without which the Earth would be freezing.
Water. Water is of course vital for human (and all) life; the water cycle means that there is fresh water to drink. Needs an atmosphere for water to be liquid.
UV. The ozone layer absorbs much of the harmful UV.
Cosmic rays. The atmosphere also absorbs most of the cosmic rays.
Meteoroids. All except the biggest space debris “burns up” when it enters the atmosphere.

The Earth's atmosphere protects and sustains the planet's inhabitants by providing warmth and absorbing harmful solar rays. In addition to containing the oxygen and carbon dioxide, which living things need to survive, the atmosphere traps the sun'senergy and wards off many of the dangers of space.
