If someone maintains a proper scale while drawing map,then the calculation of the actual distance, lengths and area will be a lot more easier, accurate from the data mentioned in the map. And many more.

Map scale is important for accurate (depending on the map scale, the larger the scale the more accurate) measurements of distances and other related parameters (e.g. orientation and size of area) to ensure that you are locating or finding the correct Area of Interest (AOI).

A sketch map without scale can be helpful if it has sufficient landmarks (e.g. iconic land marks) to pin point/ navigate you to your AOI but it is not advisable for usage that involves the requirement of accurate measurements.
