In arid and semi arid regions, agricultural fields were converted into rain fed storage structures that allowed the water to stand and moisten the soil like the khadins in Jaisalmer . These have some advantages,
1.it does not evaporate and spreads to recharge wells
2. It provides moisture for vegetation
3. No breeding ground for mosquitos
4. Water is protected from contamination to an extent.

Khadin system of preservation of water for agriculture is also referred to as the dhora in some parts of India is designed to collect the surface runoff water.

It is basically a very long earthen embankment which was built to collect the surface runoff of the surface water. It was first designed in Rajasthan.

The advantages are: it can make arid unproductive land productive and this system assured the farmers atleast one crop on the dry season.
