Khadin is a water harvesting system present in Rajasthan in which a shallow pit is constructed at the edge of a sloping land. The Rainwater from the upper reaches of the land gets deposited at the pits. These pits are connested to dug-wells which are refilled with the water.

Advantages:

1. The water harvesting technique is economical and also reduces the dependence on groundwater.

2. Khadins are better than dams as dams displace a large number of people and also cause flood whereas khadins doesn't have any such problems.

3. They help to reduce the shortage of water in areas of Rajasthan.

Khadin system is very much popular in various parts of Rajasthan. It is a system of ingenious construction which is designed to harvest surface runoff water for agriculture. It is a very long earthen embankment where the water is stored and the water is surface water. The khadin system is based on the principle of harvesting rainwater on farmland and subsequent use of this water-saturated land for the development of crops.
