What are the advantages of hydroelectric power over thermal power plants?

Hydro is usually cheap. The other claimed advantages of hydro are not universal.

Dams in tropical areas flood large amounts of vegetation when created that rots and emits so much methane, that a dam can emit more GHG per unit energy than coal. There are ideas for capturing and using the methane, but none implemented so far. Had the dam area been cleared before flooding, these would not be nearly the problem. Silt would still collect behinds the dam and might still emit a lot of methane.

The worst dam break killed over 200,000 people. Other energy sources may kill more people over time, but none is as fatal all at once. If we didn’t populate the areas under the dam it wouldn’t be a big danger, but we do.

Dams destroy the ecology of the rivers, and drive some organism extinct and other are greatly reduced in number.

Even the electrical storage capacity of dams gets compromised by the demands for water or drought.

Small dams are being removed to save the fish and the ecology of the rivers, and they produce very little energy. Run of the river small dams may be less damaging.

The reason to build big dams should be flood control and water supply. The electricity should be used as a side benefit, not the main motivation. Africa is the only area that still has lot of good unused dam sites.

Hydro can be good, but it must be analyzed carefully.
