PIL(Public Interest Litigation), as the name says is a litigation( the process to take legal action) in or by the public's interest. A public spirited individual or the aggrieved can send a letter to the court which can take legal action upon it.
The advantages of a PIL are:-
1.Citizens get an inexpensive remedy to solve the problem of crime as their is only a nominal rate of court fees.
2. Courts can concentrate on larger public issues such as the issues of Human Rights, consumer welfare and environment.
You have not specified what place it is so I take it you are talking about the advantages of a PIL in India.
3. PILs have made it easier for the judiciary to haul up the executive when it is not performing its duties properly.
4. If the petitioner ( the person who has filed the PIL) is socially or economically weak and cannot provide necessary evidence to support his case, the court orders appointed commissions to look into and collect information about the case.
Hope it helps.
