Allotropes Of Carbon :
Different form of an element which have different physical appearance and properties but their chemical properties are same are called Allotropes.
There are three Allotropes of carbon:-
1. Diamond
2. Graphite
3. Fullerene
1. Diamond -
Diamond is a 3-dimensional network of strong carbon-carbon covalent bond.
Properties of Diamond -
1. Due to the presence of large 3D network of C-C covalent bond. Diamond is very hard and very high melting point. (4827°)
2. As all the four electrons are utilized in making covalent bonds, no free electron is available for conduct electricity. Therefore, Diamond is a bad conductor of electricity.
3. Diamond is Transparent and shine in the presence of light.
Uses of Diamond -
1. Use in making Jewellery.
2. Used as a drilling tool for cutting glasses.
3. Used as a Surgical Instruments to remove cataract from eyes.
2. Graphite -
In Graphite each carbon atom is bonded with three other carbon atoms to form hexagonal rings.
Properties of Graphite -
1. Graphite is soft and has soapy touch.
2. It acts as a lubricant.
3. It is a good conductor of electricity and heat.
Uses of Graphite -
1. It is used in lead of the pencil.
2. Powered Graphite is used as dry lubricant for machiene parts. Where oil can't be used.
3. It is used in making electrodes in the cell.
3. Fullerene -
It is as same structure as graphite. But also contain pentagonal or heptagonal rings. Spherical fullerene are called Bucky balls and Cyndrical fullerene are called lucky tube or nano tubes.
Properties of Fullerene -
1. It is stable but not totally unreactive.
2. Soluble in many solvents like Co₂.
Uses of Fullerene -
1. Artificial Photosynthesis in cosmetics.
2. In Surface coating.
3. Drug Delivery System.
