In general, the western part of the belt consists mainly of metabasalts, whereas the eastern part contains bimodal volcanic rocks. Several old gold workings are found from Ramagiri to Kilarhalli along a shear zone within this schist belt. This shear zone system, which passes through the Ramagiri-Hungund greenstone belt, is about 50-100 m wide and exhibits both brittle and ductile deformation.

The schist belt is discontinuous and is often concealed under the alluvial soils amidst profusely exposed granitic intru- sive rocks.
