Ther are lots of alternatives. Literally every form of government ever tried is an alternative. I think what you are asking is: is there a GOOD alternative. Well…. Maybe, but I'm not sure what it is. The Soviets tried a weird “"bottom up” type of democracy that really didn't work. It created insider dealing to the point where there was only one legal party. That no democracy to my mind.

On the other hand any system that leads to a Trump presidency is obviously not working either and needs some reflection. I guess it boils down to this, what is the purpose of government? In general, a government is an entity that can lay down and enforce the laws that allow humanity to live in large groups. That's a pretty low bar that can easily be cleared by any working tyranny. So what is a “good” government? A good government is one that allows its members as much happiness and stability with a minimum of restriction. Give the nature of human individuals, that's a really tough needle to thread.

To quote Douglas Adams: people are a problem. In this case they are problematic because they have such different things that lead to happiness. Some people actually like repetitive labor. They like knowing when they get to work that they have X amount to do and know they can accomplish it in a manner that will get them off work and home to their families at a given time everyday. Others would find this mind bashingly boring and would rather less stability and more challenge. This is not subject to the judgement of others. These differences are required to make as many people happy as possible. Failure to do so leads to unhappiness. Unhappiness leads to discontent. And discontent always leads to violence. The way governments tend to handle this is to force people into a given mode. The Soviets tried to force people into the repetitive work mode. The US tries to shame you for being a happy worker (don't you have any ambition, son?). Neither work because not everyone is happy.
