One thing to note is that SNMP creates all kinds of security challenges when managed at scale. It also has issues around how MIBs are managed across multiple device types and versions of the firmware/OSes on the devices. The MIBs typically had limitations int he way they were implemented in terms of SNMP put (changing the device). SNMP uses a strange protocol which is not easy to program against even with libraries in most languages. When compared to today’s API ecosystem we’ve seen this functionality being regularly replaced by standard http APIs (REST) which are far more extensible and interoperable in nature.
