It is an Isentropic compression process of the refrigerant where work is supplied to the compressor to increase the pressure. If the refrigerant is found in both liquid and vapour form at this stage, it is called wet compression. If the refrigerant is purely in a vapour form, it is called dry compression.

Wet compression is especially difficult with reciprocating compressors (especially at higher pressures). The liquid droplets may sometimes damage the compressor.
