The simplest democracies, called Direct Democracies, had a large number of persons, generally in proportion to the population, who met weekly to decide the actions of the state.
Democracy is composed of three base elements:
A government chosen by popular mandate, which must be renewed in regular intervals
Separation of powers to at least three branches
Rule of law
Democracy is the rule of the people.
This does not mean elections, as so many think, which are limited to a simple choice of candidates/parties chosen by a very restricted group who gain power through far less the half the possible votes and are often deeply unpopular from the day they arrive to the day they leave.
