Adolescence”- derived from the latin word,”adoloscere” meaning “to grow , to mature”

Habits and behaviors picked up during adolescence have life-long impact. Good habits like exercise, and sleeping for 10-11 hours every night has a good impact on health. A minimum of 7-8 hours sleep is mandatory. 10-11 hours sleep helps to increase memory in adolescents.

Eating right and eating healthy is very important. Eat 3 meals and 2 snacks every day. In stead of fried snacks , have a bowl of fruit salad. Don’t skip your breakfast. Have a healthy breakfast as you are going to break the “overnight fast.” Add boiled eggs( 1 egg contain 6 gms of protein and 9 essential amino acids, lutein and zeaxanthene in egg helps protect your eyes),and cereals with milk to your breakfast for that extra proteins to build your muscles and bones.

“An apple in a day keeps the doctor away” because as apple helps to protect the bones as it contain boron and flavanoid , the pectin in apples lowers LDL, quercetin protects brain cells . Apple also helps to prevent breast cancer, lung cancer ,colon cancer as it is rich in anti-oxidants like flavanoid and polyphenol. Include fruits in you meal every day. Avoid junk foods like chips,& fries.

Chew your food well. Eat your meals slowly.  Stop eating when you feel your stomach is full.

Drink at least 8-12 glass of water to keep your body hydrated, to regulate metabolism and purify your body by removal of toxin. Drinking plenty of water helps you to urinate, which helps you lose weight and flush your digestive system of any foreign substances. Plus ,it can improve your skin and boost your immune system.

For girls: Menstruation is a normal physiological process, if the amount of blood is more ,you have to change more than 7-8 pads per day ,then you should consult a doctor.

For boys: Masturbation is healthy unless and until controlled well.

Oil your hair frequently. Warm oil massage helps in blood circulation and helps hair grow fast. Use shampoo with conditioner to have healthy hair. Avoid coloring , or using chemicals like gel. It may take away the normal shine and leave you with tangled hair.

Hormonal changes may bring heightened emotionality,arousal,irritability and aggressiveness. Its natural. Be calm and handle the situation carefully.  Practice meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and indulge in exercises like swimming, jogging, cycling etc.

Body image is defined as “the way a person pictures his or her own body.” It is an important part  of  self-concept helping to determine whether we accept or reject ourselves.  It is compromised of two dimensions: the perceptual(evaluation of the size of one’s body ) and the effective(evaluation of abilities).

Poor body image results from imaginary negatives to the total exclusion of the reality and seeing positive as negative.Comparing yourself negatively to your peer for the height, weight or any other reason may lead you to low self-esteem and a feeling of inferiority. You are unique!

Have a caring relationship with your family and friends. It helps when you are stressed. You can discuss any problem with your parents because they asses you better!
