Ableton

Ableton Live Lite 9 is a limited version of Ableton Live but it is one of the best digital audio workstations you can use for free and is available on Mac’s and PC’s. You can buy the full license for £53 which gives you an extra 4GB of sounds. if you choose not to buy Ableton, you can still use up to eight recording tracks for free. It also features a selection of effects and instruments to create professional quality audio and allows for MIDI equipment such as keyboards to be added. Ableton is fairly easy to use if you are familiar with music production software and is an industry standard software used by many producers and musicians to record and create.

Audacity

Audacity is a simple audio production tool available for free download on PC’s and Macs. Audacity isn’t a digital audio workstation in the same way as Ableton but it gives users the chance to edit samples, songs, process audio files as well as export files into a wide range of formats including MP3, WAV and AIF. Audacity is one of the most used audio software and is a great way to get started in audio production with a simple to use interface and easy navigation.

Garageband

Garageband is one of the easiest tools to create great sounding music. Garageband is only available on Apple Macs but is completely free to use. Garageband allows you to create a song with up to 255 tracks, change audio timing as well as the option of adding a virtual session drummer. Garageband does have its limitations with users unable to change the tempo within a song or having only 2 layers of effects for each track so if you love your effects, Garageband probably isn’t the best choice. Garageband is a great music production tool for beginners and once you advance into a more experienced user, you can transfer all your Garageband files to Apple’s more advanced music production software, Logic Pro.

Linux Multimedia Studio

Linux Multimedia studio is one of the best cross-platform music production software’s to use. LMMS is free to use for Windows and Mac’s and is great for all levels of music producers. LMMS allows you to create melodies and beats and also mix sounds and arrange samples. LMMS includes an FX mixer with 64 FX channels for even better sound mixing and is compatible with external software such as VST, Soundfont2 and MIDI. Linux Multimedia studio gives you the chance to export files into MP3, AIF and WAV as well as transfer files from different music production software such as FL Studio. LMMS is a great option for music producers with great features to get the best out of your audio production.
