The five precepts (Pali: pañcasīla; Sanskrit: pañcaśīla) or five rules of training (Pali: pañcasikkhapada; Sanskrit: pañcaśikṣapada) is the most important system of morality for Buddhist lay people. The precepts are commitments to abstain from killing living beings, stealing, sensual misconduct, lying and intoxication.
