The most fundamental guideline is the Five Precepts. They are:

1.    To refrain from killing
2.    To refrain from stealing
3.    To refrain from sexual misconduct
4.    To refrain from lying and deception
5.    To refrain from intoxicants and other mind altering substances

A more advanced guideline contains three more additional precepts, totaling eight which are:

6.    To refrain from eating at inappropriate times (eating before noon ensures all food is digested by night)
7.    To refrain from entertainment, performances, shows and decorations
8.    To refrain from using a high or extra comfortable bed or chair

Novice monks follow the Eight Precepts along with two additional ones which are listed below:

9.    To refrain from wearing perfume, cosmetics or any decorative body accessory
10.    To refrain from accepting money

These precepts are nothing imperative, but rather are guidelines that individuals choose to abide by when practicing Buddhism. Buddhist monks, however must strictly follow these rules since there are adhering to the teachings of the Buddha. They also follow many more precepts than what laypeople abide to.
