Over the past 200 year,  water bodies like oceans, ponds ,rivers ,lakes, seas etc.are absorbing carbon dioxide and other harmful gases emitted  from automobiles, industries and burning of fossil fuels. These harmful gases mix up in the atmosphere  and with the sea water. The atmospheric pollution traps more solar radiation in normal, thus warming the sea water and polluting it, this is having adverse effect on the environment.

Water pollution means the addition of any such substances to the water which deprives it from its actual use of comsuption.

The Principal sources of water pollution can be summarised as -

1. Discharge of chemical waste by industries.

2. Discharge of poorly treated or untreated sewage.

3. Surface runoff containing pestisides or fertilisers, detergent, spilled petroleum etc.

4. Leakage Of underground storage tanks.
