Answer:

An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction.

An earthquake occurs when the tension in the normal movements within the earths crust increases leading to formation of massive waves creating trembling on the earths surface.

1)Movements below the earths surface creates tension which keeps on accumulating.

2)High energy is released at the place where the tension mounts up creating the centre of the earthquake or the focus.

3)Seismic waves scatter in all directions from the focus.

4)Underground rocks can break along the fault lines created by movements of such waves which is expressed by an earthquake on the surface.
