When a potential difference is applied across the ends of a conductor its electrons get accelerated from negative terminal to positive terminal. During the cause of their motion the electrons collide frequently against the atoms of conductor. At each collison part of kinetic energy of electron gets converted into heat and this increases the temperature of conductor.
