Causes of landslides

Explanation:

The factors which promote landslides are:

  • Water- It diminishes the strength of rocks  and helps in movement. It also adds weight to the material.Hence , generally landslides occur after rain.
  • Slopes-The steeper the slopes ,the greater the instability of the mass.
  • Nature of rocks-Unconsolidated sediments such as clay, gravel, etc.and weak slippery rocks such as shale, volcanic tuff, phyllites etc., are not likely to be stable on top of steep slopes for a considerable period of time.
  • Structure of rocks-landslides are particularly common on hill slopes where dip of rock beds is also in same direction.Joints ,fractures, shear zones and bedding planes usually become the slip surface in case of rock slides.
