The main cause is billiary disease.... inflammatory bowel disease such as diverticulitis or a perforated bowel a blood infection or septicaemia

A liver abscess is a pus-filled mass inside the liver. Common causes are abdominal conditions such as appendicitis or diverticulitis due to haematogenous spread through the portal vein.
Polymicrobial involvement is common, with Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae being the two most frequently isolated pathogens (see the image below).
