Unfortunately, as with many of the biggest social problems facing the world, poverty is so intertwined with other issues that it is difficult or impossible to point to one cause. Poverty is intimately related to issues of infrastructure, political systems, economic systems, socioeconomic patterns, globalization, post-colonialism, the environment, and the list could go on. Essentially, poverty comes about as a result of a confluence of several unfortunate factors that lock an individual or region in a cycle of poverty. That is to say, one or more factors are preventing those people from making any headway in fighting their situation.

In some cases this could be economic: without any job prospects in the region it is impossible to make enough money to afford education or basic necessities for children, putting them in a situation where they can neither find a job nor start their own company where they can employ themselves and others. In other cases it could be medical: without access to sufficient vitamins and minerals in everyday food staples, children either die young or grow up with severe disabilities resulting from malnutrition, and parents must spend money they do not have on medical treatments instead of prevention.

The causes of poverty are not superficial or straightforward, unfortunately necessitating that the solution to global poverty must be multi-tiered and not superficial or short-term. That being said, solutions to global poverty are not along the lines of endless aid being sent to these regions. Targeted solutions that address the underlying causes, break the cycle of poverty, and sustainably set up the region for future success and growth are successful and do depend on the aid stopping and the regions growing themselves.

Causes of poverty are changing trends in a country’s economy. Associated with the lack of education, high divorce rate, a culture of poverty, overpopulation, epidemic diseases such as AIDS and malaria[1] and environmental problems such as lack of rainfall.[2][3]

Extreme weather may be a cause of poverty in many countries. Drought, rainfall and flooding are some of the biggest causes of poverty by weather. When natural disasters do not gain media attention raising money becomes more difficult. This is made worse when governments spend money in the capitals instead of the poorest areas which need it most.[4]

Almost 50 percent of people in the world today live on less than $2.50 per day.
