In order to study the IC engines we focus on the thermodynamic cycles which give correct estimation of the engines. For example, we analyse the petrol engine by studying Otto cycle. We analyse the diesel engine by studying Diesel cycle. Since Otto cycle and Diesel cycle are the thermodynamic cycle, therefore we eliminate the exhaust and suction stroke. That means in reality the engines do not operate on the thermodynamic cycle, because every time the working fluid is changed (this does not complete the cycle).
