Chinese people issued heavy taxes to British traders and they had a huge army too. So to defeat them, they British grew opium in India and sold it in China a lot of Chinese got addicted to opium. so China banned opium. but then Britain retaliated and they won the Chinese .in the second war , Britain and France attacked China due to desire of more administrative power. Hope this helps :)
