  • In most of the causes, water scarcity is caused by over exploitation, excessive use and unequal access to water among different social groups.
  • Water scarcity may occur due to large population as it requires more water for domestic purpose.
  • To provide food to large population, agriculture is done on large scale that requires much water for irrigation especially in dry season agriculture.
  • Intensive industrialization and urbanisation is also responsible for water scarcity. Industries use water in large scale for different purposes along with it require power that is generated by hydroelectric power stations.
  • According to the citizens fifth report, CSE 1999, big rivers like Ganga, Yamuna are far from being pure and many small rivers have turned into toxic stream.

Explanation:

Water shortages may be caused by climate change, such as altered weather patterns including droughts or floods, increased pollution, and increased human demand and overuse of water. A water crisis is a situation where the available potable, unpolluted water within a region is less than that region's demand.
