Early Life & Education

Katherine Mansfield was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1888, a middle child with two older and two younger siblings. As a teenager, she had a few stories published in her high school's magazine.

In 1903, Katherine and her sisters were enrolled at the Queen's College in London, England. Once there, she perfected her cello skills and worked as an editor for the school's newspaper. While she finished her education, Katherine traveled across Europe. In 1906, she went home to New Zealand for several years before returning to London.

After returning to London, Katherine had an affair with a man named Garnet Trowell, and entered into a rash marriage to George Charles Bowden, whom she left the day after the wedding. Garnet's family did not approve of their relationship and, after Katherine became pregnant, her furious mother sent her to a spa in Germany. During her stay, she miscarried. When Katherine returned to London again in 1910, she was a changed woman.
