======================================

When a substance is heated, it gains thermal energy. Therefore, its particles move faster and its temperature rises. When a substance is cooled, it loses thermal energy, which causes its particles to move more slowly and its temperature to drop

=======================================

If water is cooled enough, it can change to ice. If ice is warmed enough, it can change to liquid water. Heating a substance makes the molecules move faster. Cooling a substance makes the molecules move slower

=======================================

This is because temperature is a measurement of the average kinetic energy of a substance. So, when you cool a substance, the temperature drops and makes the molecules move slower, lowering its KE. Because the molecules are more at rest, their potential energy increases
