1) Popularity of western clothes: By the middle of 20th century due to the impact of western culture western clothes became popular among the aristocrat of India.
2)Khadi : In non co operation movement Gandhi boycotted british textiles.At that time Khadi got popular among the indians.But not all could afford Khadi.
3) Religion : On the middle of 20th century Rabindranath Tagore proposed to make a dress that would combine both Hindu and Muslim elements.This way the national dress of India could be made.Chapkan was made for this reason.
