He felt lonely and insecure initially as he was not adjusted to a new place. But after his house was burnt, the generosity and kindness of the schoolmates touched him and makes him accepting the changes that had taken place. He no longer felt insecure.

Explanation:

  • The writer, Polly Adler is the author of 'A house is not a home'.
  • At the beginning of the story, before Zan's house was burnt, the writer was very unhappy in his new school.
  • He misses his old friends, teachers, and of course the old school where he was leading a very comfortable student life.
  • He felt awkward and lonely starting as a freshman after having been a senior in junior high.
  • He found it difficult to relate to her old classmates and teachers.
  • After the fire had happened, he was deeply touched by the generosity and kindness shown by his new teachers and schoolmates.
  • Everyone including the teachers is deeply lamented and comes to help with books, clothes, and school supplies.
  • He was overwhelmed and started opening up to them, making new friends.
  • People who had never spoken to him before are coming up to him with some kind of help and which in turn helped him to make more friends.
  • The tragedy thus helped him to mature and become more open and accepting of the changes that were taking place.
  • He was no longer insecure.
