- There must be source of potential difference. Without the applied voltage, current cannot flow through the circuit.
- There must be a complete path for the current flow. From one side of the voltage source, through the external circuit and returning to the other side of the voltage source.
- The external circuit is generally resistive. The resistance in the circuit either generates heat or limits the amount of current.
