The characteristics of a living organisms include :

Growth :

The increase in growth and increase in number of individuals are twin characteristics of living organism. In plants, the cell division occurs throughout their life but, in animals it does only upto a certain age. Repair and replace of cells takes place by cell division in animals. The unicellular organism grow by cell division and increase the number of individuals. Hence, we can say that growth and reproduction are mutually exclusive events.

Reproduction :

Reproduction is the production of progeny that are similar to the parents. The two types of reproduction include Sexual and Asexual. For unicellular organisms, growth and reproduction are almost similar.

Metabolism :

It is the sum total of chemical reactions in a body. It includes anabolism and catabolism.

Consciousness :

It is the ability to sense the surrounding.

Homeostasis :

It is the ability to maintain the internal conditions the same despite the external environmental changes.
