Plane mirror is the one having a straight aperture. It also forms images and let's see the characteristics of Image formed by the plane mirror.

Characteristics of Image:

  • The image formed by plane mirror is erect.
  • The image formed by plane mirror is of same size. The magnification = 0.
  • The image is virtual which cannot obtain in a screen.
  • The image is laterally inverted. The left is seen on the right and the right is seen on left.

The Image is formed at the same distance behind the mirror as the object is infront of it. So, The Image distance = Object Distance. The position of the image is at the same distance as that of position of object.

Explanation:

Characteristics of the image form by the plane mirror are:

Since the image form by the plane mirror has magnification is 1 then,

  • (I). The size of the image form will be the same as the size of the object.

  • (II). The distance of the image from the mirror will be the same as the distance of the object from the mirror.

  • (III). The image form will be virtual.

  • (IV). The image form will be upright.

the position of image related to the position of the object

The image is as far behind the mirror as the object is in front of it i.e, the perpendicular distance of image from the mirror is equal to the perpendicular distance of object from the mirror.
