A disturbance or an oscillation that travels through any medium even space-time along with a transfer of time is called a wave. The characteristics of a wave are :

  • Wavelength: it's one of the most important features of waves like sound waves. the longitudinal waves of sound have compressions and rarefactions in any medium and the distances after which each one of them repeats themselves is called the wavelength of the wave. In simpler terms, it is the distance between each rarefaction or each compression.
  • Amplitude: The size of a wave is called its amplitude. it's the distance covered by a vibrating body or particle in one direction.

The wave is measured by these two characteristics i.e. the wavelength of the wave and the amplitude of the wave.
