Pneumatophores or respiratory roots are short, vertical and negatively geotropic roots which occur in mangrove plants. The roots come out of swamp. Their upper ends bears lenticels for exchange of gases. Avicennia, Heritiera, Rhizophora and Sonneratia are some examples of plants producing pneumatophores.
