The basic characteristic of commercial agriculture is that high doses of modern inputs are used for higher productivity, such as high yielding varieties, fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, weed killers, and so on.

ANSWER:

Successful crop production or cultivation depends upon several factors such as knowing how crops grow and develop, effect of different nutrients, and water and climate on the crop’s growth, and management and modification of each factor for raising the crop yield.

EXPLANATION:

Improvement or upgrading of crop variety can be done by introducing a gene or hybridisation. Hybridisation is the crossing between genetically varied plants. Crop upgrading through a gene gives the required characteristics and leads to genetically modified crops.

Crop yield and cultivation practices are related to soil quality, water availability, and weather. As weather situations such as flood situations and drought are erratic, varieties which are grown in varied climatic conditions are beneficial.

The reasons for which improvement of variety is done are greater yield, upgraded quality, abiotic and biotic resistance, and change in duration of maturity, wider adaptability, and desirable agronomic characteristics.  Nutrients are provided to crops through soil, water and air.

There are 16 nutrients that are vital for crops. Air supplies oxygen/carbon, water supplies hydrogen and soil supplies 13 nutrients to crops. Of these 13 nutrients, 6 are needed in huge amounts and are thus termed macronutrients. The other 7 utilised by crops in small amounts and are thus termed micronutrients.
