Characteristics of metals are:-
- Malleability - The property of a metal to be beaten into thin sheets is known as malleability.
- Ductility - The property of a metal to be twisted into a thin wire is known as ductility.
- Sonorosity - When a metal is banged with a hammer, it produces a ringing sound. This property of metals is sonorosity.
- Thermal & Electrical Conductivity - This property of metals enables them to allow heat and electricity to pass through them.
- Thermal Expansion - When metals are heated, they expand. This property is known as thermal expansion.
- Physical State - All metals, except Mercury (which is a liquid), are solid in their physical state.
- Density - Metals generally have a high density.
- Hardness - Most metals are very hard. They can withstand quite high pressures without getting distorted.
- Lustre - Metals have a shining surface. This is known as metallic lustre.
- Tensile Strength - It is the property due to which are substance can bear a lot of pressure without breaking.
- Melting & Boiling Point - Metals usually have a high melting and boiling point. But one exception is that of Caesium metal. Its melting point is only 28.7°C.
