The common people were suffering economically and socially due to the 3 class social setup, feudalism, the dominance of clergy and the nobles.
The middle class and the peasants had to pay all the taxes while the nobles and clergy were exempted from paying taxes, during famines these common people had to suffer a lot , yet they weren't exempted from paying taxes.
The king then Louis XVI tried to convene a meeting to increase taxes further.
The women were standing in huge queues to get a single loaf of bread due to frequent famines in France then.
When the people realised that Monarch is not at all concerned about their welfare and only burden them with more and more taxes , they decided to overthrow Monarchy or at least check the powers of absolute Monarchy and form a government on their own.
